What a surreal past few days. Unless you are living under a rock, you have probably heard by now that Dave Nonis has been fired by Francesco Aquilini. On that day, the big news was that the Canucks were about to sign a potential big piece of the offensive puzzle by signing Fabian Brunstrom. However, one of things, as it was reported, holding him back was that he wanted assurances that Dave Nonis would still be around after he signed. When I heard that, I thought oh oh, this could be trouble. Surely enough, on that evening of April 14th, word came down that Nonis had been fired.
While I am of the agreement that ownership has every right to do what they want, I think that have made a big mistake. And with the exception of a few shortsighted people who like to call the radio shows or a select few journalists, the reaction from many fans, media, and respected hockey people is that this is a wrong move of the highest degree. A studdering, bumbling Aquilini at his press conference tried to outline that he was looking for leadership that would build a sustainable winner and yet fired Nonis because not making the playoffs was unacceptable. How ironic. And of course, they fire the man who said all along that they were building for the long term to win four rounds, not one. If you want to see leadership and vision, go to Canucks.com and watch the difference between Nonis' and Aquilini's press conferences. I truly think the Canucks have taken a step back in their quest for the Cup. I don't know where they will go from here. Right now, I'm too sick to care.
